Enjoying the Ocean

Unlike some of the beaches on the east coast - our beach is free!  We are proud of our beautiful beaches and enjoy the wonder of the ocean with it's many moods! Sunbathing naked is prohibited on the Outer Banks; however driving on the beach in an approved vehicle is allowed during the off season.  Remember that you are not permitted to drive a car with open containers of alcholic beverages.

Tips for ocean swimmers:

Swim near a lifeguard.

Never swim alone.

Look for rip currents or runouts.

If you have been drinking alcohol, stay out of the water. Alcohol can impair your judgment, breathing, coordination, and swimming ability.

If an electrical storm approaches, give yourself plenty time to leave the beach and find shelter. These storms approach very fast.

Do not swim, surf, or use any kind of a flotation device within 30 feet of a pier.

Do not use flotation devices or rafts as substitutes for swimming ability. Summer southwesterly winds can push them far from shore.

The enjoyment of the ocean must also be approached with a certain amount of knowledge and caution. Know the waters where you are swimming and pay attention to unexpected currents and drop-offs.    Lifeguards are for your protection against such hazards and you should always swim at beaches protected by lifeguards between the hours of 10AM and 6PM.; or with friends who know how to swim and rescue.  Additional information can be found on the Ocean Safety section of this website and at the NOAA rip current safety website. Common sense and a good sunscreen lotion are also recommended for everyone.  Especially those who have not been out in the sun as you will be biking or walking frequently.

Lifeguard
Lifeguard stands are located at various intervals along the beaches.

Outer Banks beaches employ a warning system when the water is too dangerous to swim - a large red flag flying indicates that the currents are strong and the water is unsafe for swimming; do not go into the water.  Failure to observe the flags can result in a heavy financial fine. Conditions may change during the course of a day - pay attention.

"Mightier than the thunder of the great waters, mightier than the breakers of the sea--the LORD on high is mighty." Psalm 93:4
