Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions About Pathways:

Pathways receives inquiries and questions about the international student worker program on a daily basis.  It is mostly misunderstood by locals.  Here are some of the questions we are often asked with answers to the questions:

Question #1: Why do you bring these foreigners here?

Pathways does not bring anyone to the Outer Banks. We are a Christ-centered, non-profit ministry dedicated to helping the international college students. The students we work with have already arranged with one of many employment agencies - on their own - to come here.  They have paid thousands of dollars for the opportunity to come to the United States to work and travel. They come to learn about our country and to work hard to make money to help with their education. They are the future leaders in their country.  It is in our best interest to help them have a positive experience while they are visiting and working with us.

Question #2: What about our locals?  We need jobs and these foreigners are taking jobs away.

The local economy in the Outer Banks is dependent upon the services offered by these young college students.  They are here for a limited time - mostly during the summer months.  Often they fill jobs the local workforce rejects or does not qualify for.  They are a dependable workforce; mostly with good work ethic.   Also, the students rent rooms from local homeowners; helping them meet their financial needs. Most employers tell us to refer any locals who are looking for jobs to them for screening and an interview.

Question #3:  Is Pathways a private business?  Or is it a local or government agency?

None of the above.  Pathways is a ministry.  We are dependent upon donations to maintain our facility and operation; we do not receive any government funding.  The international students come to us by word of mouth, from our website and from local businesses and organizations.  We do not serve all the international students - just those who come to us for help, friendship and spiritual and emotional support.

Question #4:   How can locals help these young students?

Locals can help by being kind to the students. Employers should treat them fairly. Homeowners who rent to the students can offer housing they would be proud to offer an American college student who is many miles from home. We can all pray for their safety as they travel our roads at all hours of the day and night, regardless of the weather, while walking or biking.

Question #5:  What can I do to help Pathways succeed?

We need:

  • working bikes
  • volunteers
  • mentors
  • financial support  (see locals tab - donate here)
  • Special treats like homed baked cookies
  • Most importantly, prayer!
