Housing

Outer Banks Housing
Many types of housing are available on the Outer Banks

Pathways International is a good place to start searching for housing. We have staff available and willing to help. Our directory of available housing is broken down geographically and provides up to date listings of houses and rooms to rent.

Please note that Pathways does not guarantee rentals. All rentals are between you and the realtor or homeowner. If there is a question we will be glad to discuss the matter and help if necessary. If you want a response to your email, please include your email address!

Local Real Estate brokers are another source of information.

Student housing is available in different ways:

  • Independent Living:  Students rent the entire house.
  • Shared Living:  Students rent a room or apartment in the owner’s home.
  • Host Family:  Students live in the home of the homeowner.

Most houses require a deposit. If the property is damaged or the lease agreement broken, the cost will be deducted from your deposit. Read your lease agreement and understand it BEFORE signing. This is a binding contract!

The Outer Banks of North Carolina has very limited public transportation, so it is important to find housing close to where you are employed.  (See Transportation section).

The advertisement sections of the local newspapers, (Outer Banks Sentinel and the Coastland Times), are also good sources of information.

"One thing I ask of the LORD, this is what I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to gaze upons the beauty of the LORD and to seek him in his temple. For in the day of trouble he will keep me safe in his dwelling; he will hide me in the shelter of his tabernacle and set me high upon a rock."

Psalm 27:4-5

Tips and quick information for Students:

  • There is limited transportation on the Outer Banks
  • Read and understand the lease before signing. Make sure you have a clear understanding of the damage deposit, and especially the terms of departure
  • Take pictures of the property recording the condition of your apartment at the time it is rented, noting any damage
  • Choose a house close to your workplace, use our  *"Mile Marker" system, see below.
  • Communicate with your homeowner or agent – ask questions!

* Upon entering the Outer Banks by way of the Wright Memorial Bridge the main road (Hwy 158) is marked off by a mile marker starting with marker one and goes to mile marker 17 in Nags Head.
