The flat ground of our beach location makes it easy for cycling. For many students, the bicycle is the primary means of local transportation.
Good bicycles can be purchased new at reasonable prices ($80-150) at Wal-Mart and K-Mart. Pathways International has used bicycles available which can be rented for the season for $30.00 plus a $20.00 REFUNDABLE DEPOSIT upon return of the bike. We do not have a large amount of used bikes so this is a "first come first served" basis.
Tips for Cyclists
- Wear white at night - keep a white shirt in your backpack
- Use lights on the front and rear of your bicycle
- State law requires light projection of 300 feet and a reflector on the back visible for at least 200 feet
- Bicycle on the right side of the road or path
- Carry bags or backpacks safely - do not let them get caught in your wheel
- Wear a bicycle helmet
- Obey traffic signals and regulations
- Remember: many motorists on the road during the summer are vacationers. They are unfamiliar with our roads and not used to many bikers. They are looking at street signs and buildings - NOT YOU!
- Buy a lock for your bike and keep your bike locked whenever you are not riding it - even for 5 minutes!
- Bikes are frequently stolen!
From Kitty Hawk to Nags Head, avoid cycling on Route 158 (the Bypass). The shoulder of the roadway disappears in some areas and traffic is very heavy and fast moving. Sidewalks are not continuous along this road. Route 12 (the Beach Road) is the main road closest to the ocean. It runs parallel to Route 158. It has less traffic a lower speed limit and has a marked bike lane. The safest routes, however, will be the residential streets between the Bypass and the Beach Road.
