Getting Here

The closest air and rail terminals to the Outer Banks are in Norfolk, Virginia, about one and a half hours away and the closest bus terminal is at Elizabeth City, North Carolina, an hour away.

Your sponsoring agency or your employer should be able to help get you here.  If not, contact our Transportation Department at transportation@pathwayshouse.org. We can transport from the airport or bus station at a low cost to you.  Because we operate with volunteers, we need at least 3 days notice to arrange for your transport.

If you arrive by air in Norfolk Virginia taxi service is available 24/7.  A cheaper way may be the Norfolk Airport Express shuttle service. This service must be reserved at least 8 hours in advance.  This service can be contacted at 1-800-643-2197 or at the Norfolk Airport Express website.

If you are unable to make early arrangement for the final part of your travel, private transport services offer a reliable and safe option.  The cost of such transportation is usually $125 and up, from Norfolk International Airport. However, if you or your sponsor can arrange to coordinate your travel in groups of four or five, this cost can be shared, making individual travel costs much less.  A listing of private services in the Norfolk area is provided in the Getting Around section.

Regardless of how you get here, while traveling always be mindful of your personal safety, especially at crowded bus terminals. See the Safety and Security section for tips on how to stay safe while traveling.
